Preparing Your Garden for a Queensland Summer
Queensland summers bring heat, humidity and storms in the same week. The work you do in spring decides whether your garden coasts through or struggles.

Spring checklist
- Top up mulch to around 75mm across all beds
- Clear gutters, drains and surface flow paths before storm season
- Prune back growth that will block drainage or overhang the roof
- Deep water established plantings weekly rather than lightly every day
- Feed the lawn and correct any low, water-holding areas
Storm readiness
Check large trees for dead limbs and unbalanced canopies before the first big storm. Stake recently planted trees, and make sure retaining walls and garden beds have somewhere for water to go.
Through the heat
- Mow higher - longer leaf shades the soil and holds moisture
- Water early morning, not evening, to reduce fungal problems
- Watch for pests on new growth in humid weeks
