How Often Should a Brisbane Garden Be Maintained?

In the subtropics growth is seasonal and dramatic. A schedule that suits July will not keep up in January. Here is the rhythm we use across our maintenance clients.

A seasonal schedule

  • September to April - mow fortnightly, hedge every 6 to 8 weeks
  • May to August - mow monthly, hedge once across the season
  • Mulch top-up once a year, ideally in early spring
  • Structural pruning once a year, after flowering for most subtropical species

Signs you are behind

  • Clippings clumping because more than a third of the leaf blade is cut
  • Hedges going woody and bare at the base
  • Weeds seeding through mulch
  • Beds losing their edge line against the lawn

Residential versus commercial

Commercial and body corporate sites usually need a tighter cycle than a private garden, because presentation is continuous and visible to every resident or visitor. Most of our commercial clients run weekly or fortnightly year-round.
